Senior Dog Care · Chantilly, VA

Your dog is getting older.
Let's make sure they're thriving.

Senior dogs need more than a standard wellness visit once a year. They need a vet who pays attention to the things that change gradually — joint function, organ health, weight, dental disease, cognitive changes — and who acts early rather than waiting for problems to become obvious. At Nova Pets Health Center, we've been caring for aging dogs for over 35 years.

What clients say about senior dog care at Nova Pets.

★★★★★

“Great caring staff. We took our floppy eared dog in for his bi-annual ear infection and it was cleaned up and medicated. Also, got some more Adequan. It has been a life saver for our elderly pet, definitely giving him relief for his back legs and allowing him to go up stairs, run, etc., more easily.

Dr Masood was able to assess and help with my lab's gastrointestinal and joint issues after years of seeing other vets. I am always able to get an appointment when needed and to talk if I have any questions.”

Joint health

When your dog starts slowing down,
joint pain is often why.

Arthritis and joint degeneration are among the most common conditions in aging dogs — and among the most undertreated. Many owners attribute their dog's reduced activity, reluctance to climb stairs, or stiffness after rest to "just getting older." Sometimes that's true. But often, something can be done about it.

Dr. Masood evaluates joint health as part of every senior dog visit — assessing range of motion, pain response, muscle mass, and gait. When appropriate, we discuss treatment options that can meaningfully improve your dog's comfort and mobility.

Dr. Masood has seen a lot of senior dogs. He knows what to look for.
Subtle changes in gait, weight distribution, muscle mass, and behavior are often the first signs of something treatable. They're easy to miss if you're not paying attention to them.
Adequan Canine
Injectable joint support — the gold standard for canine arthritis.
Adequan (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) is an injectable medication that works differently from pain relievers. Rather than just masking discomfort, it actively supports cartilage health, lubricates joint fluid, and inhibits the enzymes that break down cartilage. It's administered as an injection series here in our clinic.
  • Supports and protects existing cartilage
  • Improves joint fluid lubrication
  • Reduces inflammation in affected joints
  • Can meaningfully improve mobility and quality of life
  • Administered in-clinic as an injection series
  • Available for ongoing maintenance after initial series

What we watch for

Common conditions in senior dogs —
and what we do about them.

Senior dogs aren't defined by a number — they're defined by their health status. What matters is monitoring the things that tend to change as dogs age, catching problems early, and managing them proactively rather than reactively.

Arthritis & joint disease
The most common senior condition. We assess joint health at every visit and offer Adequan injections, pain management, and weight guidance to reduce the load on affected joints.
Heart & respiratory disease
Heart murmurs, enlarged hearts, and respiratory changes are more common in older dogs. We listen carefully at every exam and discuss monitoring or treatment when indicated.
Kidney & liver disease
Organ function declines gradually and silently in many senior dogs. Bloodwork catches these changes early — often before your dog shows any symptoms — giving us time to act.
Dental disease
Dental disease is nearly universal in older dogs and directly impacts systemic health. We assess oral health at every visit and offer professional cleanings and extractions when needed.
Weight & muscle changes
Both weight gain and unintended weight loss are concerning in senior dogs. We track body condition and muscle mass over time and adjust nutrition and activity recommendations accordingly.
Lumps, masses & skin changes
New lumps are common in older dogs and range from benign to significant. We evaluate every mass we find and recommend biopsy or removal when appropriate.
Cognitive changes
Disorientation, changed sleep patterns, reduced responsiveness, and house training regression can all signal cognitive dysfunction in older dogs — a condition we can help manage.
Gastrointestinal changes
Appetite changes, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss in senior dogs often have treatable underlying causes. We look beyond the symptom to find out what's actually going on.

Senior wellness exams

What a senior dog exam at
Nova Pets looks like.

A senior dog exam goes beyond the standard annual wellness visit. We're specifically looking for the changes that tend to accumulate gradually in older dogs — the kind that are easy to miss if you're not paying close attention.

Full physical examination
Heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, skin, eyes, ears, teeth. We assess body condition score and muscle mass and compare to previous visits.
Joint & mobility assessment
Range of motion, pain response, gait evaluation, and muscle symmetry. We look for early signs of arthritis or orthopedic changes before they become obvious.
Senior bloodwork panel
Complete blood count, chemistry panel, thyroid levels, and urinalysis. Establishes baseline values and detects organ function changes early — before symptoms appear.
Dental evaluation
Dental disease is nearly universal in older dogs and has real systemic consequences. We assess oral health and discuss cleaning when indicated.
Lump & mass evaluation
Every new lump gets noted and assessed. We discuss watch-and-wait vs. biopsy vs. removal based on location, size, and change over time.
Honest conversation about quality of life
We talk with you about what we're seeing, what it means, what options exist, and what to watch for at home. No jargon, no runaround.

How often should senior dogs be seen?

The standard recommendation for senior dogs is twice-yearly wellness exams rather than once a year. A lot can change in six months in an aging dog, and catching it early matters.

That said, every dog is different. Some senior dogs are thriving and only need the basics. Others have multiple conditions requiring more frequent monitoring. We'll give you a recommendation based on your dog's actual health status — not a one-size-fits-all answer.

New patients welcome

If your senior dog has been seeing another vet and you're looking for a second opinion or a fresh set of eyes — we're happy to take a look. Dr. Masood has helped clients whose dogs' issues went unaddressed for years at other practices.

Your senior dog deserves
more than just managing decline.

Schedule a senior wellness exam and let's take a close look at where your dog actually is — and what we can do to keep them comfortable and active for as long as possible.
